What Is Digital Signature

The development of the Internet has facilitated the exchange of messages of all kinds to different people despite of their geographic location. To verify the authenticity of the messages, digital signatures are used. The digital signature based on cryptography and can be defined as a sequence of electronic data (bits) obtained by applying an algorithm (mathematical formula) or asymmetrical encryption public key.

These systems encrypt messages using two different keys which include private and public keys. The private key is known only by the person who owns the key pair. The public, meanwhile, can be known by anyone.

The use of digital signature assures the sender and the receiver of the message can make a reliable transaction. To do these electronically signed messages, here are the things that you need to consider:

• irrefutably attribute of the signer's identity.
• ensure absolute integrity of the message that the solutions document received is exactly the same as issued without having suffered any alteration during transmission.
• ensure your location so that the message sender can not repudiate or deny in any way that the message has been sent by him.
• confidentiality of the contents of the message (the message could not be read by others).

To obtain the key used to digitally sign messages, you must go either personally or through the site of the company or entity that has the status of "Certified Service Provider" to apply the key pair and corresponding digital certificate.

The service provider of electronic signature certification will verify the identity of the applicant either directly or through bodies (Local Authorities Register) and will be given a card with a magnetic strip on which the key pair digital certificate is recorded. With the magnetic card and a suitable magnetic strip reader connected to a personal computer, you can use the card information to digitally sign electronic messages.

In Spain, there are several certification authorities that look into digital signatures. The first was the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre and then have been joined by many others such as ACE (Electronic Certification Agency) which is formed mainly by banks, and Clown (Foundation for the Study of Telecommunication Security) which consists of notaries, registrars and other industries. All of them employ some means of legally recognized identification that is very secure.

A digital signature is like a badge that is affixed onto a document. This certifies that the document was not altered before it was sent. These are really important for a business to securely transfer the data via an electronic communication channel.
